July 2024, at PSV Heidelberg Budo Dojo, Elsa-Brandstroem-Strasse 8, Heidelberg. Close to 40 participants converged on our Dojo over the weekend from France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Japan, Romania, Singapore, The Netherlands, and the USA.
Yamashima Sensei is a respected Aikido instructor known for his gentle yet powerful technique. He began his Aikido journey in 1961 at Hosei University under the tutelage of Arikawa and Yamada Shihans. Later, he studied at the Aikikai Hombu Dojo, where Seigo Yamaguchi and Osawa Shihans significantly influenced his development. With 63 years of Aikido experience, Yamashima Sensei remains a dedicated and inspiring teacher.
Yamashima Sensei's aikido is characterised by soft, direct movements and a strong connection to the centre. He emphasises subtle physical techniques to develop "Ki" or life energy. He is also licenced in Yagyu Shinkage Ryu, a traditional Japanese sword style. His humility and deep understanding of Aikido make him a sought-after instructor worldwide. He teaches at Chiyoda-ku Aikikai, Minami Tanaka Dojo and Nerima Aikido Rengokai Dojo and frequently travels abroad for seminars.
A significant aspect of Yamashima Sensei's career is his deep connection with the Aikido founder, O-Sensei. During O-Sensei's last years, Yamashima Sensei often attended to him, and he cherishes the mysterious and profound lessons he learned. Yamashima Sensei also trained closely with the current and former Doshu at the Hombu Dojo, solidifying his understanding and appreciation of Aikido's spiritual and physical aspects.
Yamashima Sensei began teaching Aikido at the Tokyo Local Government's dojo while working for the Japanese Ministry of the Environment. His international teaching career started after he retired in 2002, prompted by invitations from Aikido practitioners in Hawaii, New Zealand, and Europe. His global influence grew as more dojos sought his guidance, attracted by his unique, gentle approach to Aikido.
Despite his extensive travel schedule, Yamashima Sensei remains committed to regular practice at the Hombu Dojo. He values the lessons from his mentors, Arikawa and Yamaguchi Shihans, integrating their teachings into his own evolving style. Yamashima Sensei emphasizes the importance of continuous practice to understand the body-mind connection, particularly as one ages.
Yamashima Sensei's teaching philosophy is centered on enjoying life and practice. He believes in not overthinking lessons and finding joy in everyday activities, including a simple beer and meal after practice. His approachable demeanor and profound insights make him a beloved figure in the Aikido community.
Takeshi Yamashima Sensei is a masterful Aikido instructor whose gentle yet powerful technique, extensive experience, and deep connection to Aikido's roots inspire practitioners worldwide. His dedication to continuous learning and joy in practice exemplifies the essence of Aikido.
Yamashima Sensei and all of the participants were very happy to train in our spacious Dojo. They hope to return next year. If you missed this seminar, then you should definitely make it a point to see Yamashima Sensei next year. Thanks to the members of Aikido School Mannheim and PSV Heidelberg e.V. Aikido Dojo for their outstanding support.
